Tired of Netflix autoplay? Here's how to turn it off

If you enjoy movies and TV streaming on Netflix, then you have no doubt that the service's OpToPlay feature has arrived. It's been around for years, causing frustration for viewers who don't want to be bombarded by unwanted trailers while browsing to see something.

And, while some people - we're watching you, binge-watchers - may enjoy the way the new episodes of the Netflix series begin before the end-credits roll, others like to decide for themselves episodes if they'll move on.

Angry customers go public
A Change.org article requesting the option to prevent Netflix autoplay has collected 124,799 signatures.

In March 2017, someone started a Twitter account called Stop Op Topview to complain about Netflix. While it may seem futile at first, some of the complaints made by parents were serious:

Method # 1:

All you have to do is:

Sign in to your Netflix account
Select your profile photo at the top-right and then click "Manage Profiles." (Yes, that's right: You may have a different setting than the others on your account.)
Select the profile for which you want to disable the op topplay
Tick the checkboxes to allow you to topple content - either the next episode in the series, previews while browsing, both, or both. (The "next episode" option was actually available for a while, though many users seem to have missed it.)
Click the "Save" button
You need to do this to make changes to all your devices. Changes will take effect after a delay, but you can force the switch by switching to another user profile and then back to you.

Method # 2:

Alternative ways to do the same thing:

Sign in to your Netflix account
Select "Account"
On the Account page, scroll down to the My Profile section
Click the link for "Playback settings"
You will see the same checkbox with the same choices. Tick the one you want to change. There is no save button, so just exit
Now you know how to prevent Netflix autoplay ... and you can browse the clock quietly and bilaterally as you wish. The power is in your hands. Use it wisely.
