How vulnerable is America? : Cyberwar with Iran
Cyberwar with Iran: How vulnerable is America? | Security officials say a counter-cyber attack on the US could be triggered after the assassination of Iranian General Qasim Solimani in Baghdad on Friday.
This means that the electricity and electricity you use, the smart devices you carry and your bank accounts may have more harm than bad actors in the past.
The cyber conflict between the US and Iran has been quiet for years, with hacking efforts from the Middle East going on the same day. But now that the government has pulled out one of the most powerful men in Iran, the flow of hacking efforts is expected.
Ironnet CyberSpace Vice President Jameel N. Jaafar said "maybe they will double up" to help protect countries from modern cyber threats. "There will be more cyber attacks in the short term. Most of them target online services."
Internet-connected products are inherently hacked, and nowadays most user-centric devices are connected to the network, so hackers in Iran can go to some of the largest and most widely used services in the country
According to Paul Martini, co-founder of network security platform Ibas, private sector organizations, including banking, healthcare and energy services, are the primary targets.
At worst, Iranian hackers can "shut down the entire power grid right away," says Martini. "It's not just the lights, it's the Internet that can turn off communication systems. You can shut down an entire county or country, without firing a single bullet or missile."
If the US is not sophisticated enough to completely undermine Iran's hacking capabilities, top-level executives around the world can bribe bitcoin to sophisticated hackers, Martini said.
Large cities such as Atlanta, Boston and New Orleans have been crippled with a variety of cyber security in recent history.
The Trump administration has issued a series of cyber attacks on Iran over the years. Iran and hackers in general have become more sophisticated in their attacks on interconnected computing systems over time.
"The United States is not as secure as cybersecurity," said Adam Levine, founder of the Cyber Scout Platform. "We're not making the investment we need to make or the training we need. We're ducking."
As the 2019 RAND study points out, it’s important to remember that cyber attack success rates are low. The study found that most Iranian cyber operations focused more on retaliation than on coercion.
Financial institutions have fraud prevention techniques that can be baked into their networks and reduce the risk of many updates, so there is some security.
Despite cybersecurity in the air, expert guidance for Internet security remains.
Use a secure password. Instead of relying on Internet connectivity or devices, save hard copies of the information and write down the phone number.
"Go back to the basics," said Martini. "It's not doomsday. You need to build a footwear or bomb shelter here, but store important information so that you can work in everyday life, even if you lose digital access."
